The women's marathon 10 kilometre event at the 2024 Summer Olympics was held on 8 August 2024 in the River Seine, Paris. It was the fifth appearance of the event, having first been held in 2008.
Qualification
[edit]The women's 10 km race featured 24 swimmers, one less than the Tokyo 2020 roster:[1][2][3]
- 3: the three medalists in the 10 km races at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan
- 13: the top thirteen swimmers vying for qualification at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar
- 5: one representative from each FINA continent (Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania).
- 1: from the host nation (France) if not qualified by other means. If one or more French open water swimmers qualify regularly and directly, their slots will be reallocated to the next highest-ranked eligible swimmers from the 2024 World Aquatics Championships.
Competition format
[edit]Unlike all of the swimming events in the pool, the men's and women's marathon 10 kilometre races are held in open water. No preliminary heats are held, with only the single mass-start race being contested. The race is held using freestyle swimming, with a lack of stroke regulations.[4]
