DYK nomination

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your contributions. Please try to keep an eye on Template:Did you know nominations/2020 dengue outbreak in Singapore for any reviewer comments. BTW, I've been advocating for years that nominations should be in a namespace where IPs can create them, but that obviously hasn't happened yet.  MANdARAXXAЯAbИAM  23:33, 28 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Mandarax: Will do.
Regarding nominations by IP users: I saw no prohibition against it in the DYK rules, and was unpleasantly surprised to discover the wizard wouldn't work unless signed in -- after I'd filled the form out. Not sure how often there are people doing it by hand like I did; it's an obstacle for sure. Regarding implementation, a dedicated namespace sounds like overkill. Draftspace is also not ideal, as evidenced by the cleanup that was needed in this case. I think perhaps a workflow similar to AFC back in its early days could be feasible:
  • DYK nomination wizard should first check if user is not signed in, offer options to log in or register, or proceed as-is under an IP, with caveats
  • continuing as an IP does not immediately create the nomination, instead the information is captured somewhere, maybe in a table on an existing page, or Template:Did you know nominations/IP nomination holding area
  • a bot routinely scans the holding area, takes care of finishing up the remaining tasks: create the nomination page, transcludes it on Template talk:Did you know and article talk pages, drops a message on IP user's talk page (like what you put above). Edit summaries could indicate "on behalf of <IP goes here>"
  • or, for that matter, a human could do it too -- can be facilitated with simple tools or clever use of templates.
FWIW, if you're up for making a renewed push for such an initiative, I will support and try to assist as able. -- 2406:3003:2077:1E60:C998:20C6:8CCF:5730 (talk) 08:43, 29 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Your suggestions are good, but it's very unlikely the effort would be put in to implement them, since IP nominations are so rare. (Of course, the question is, are they so rare because of the difficulty?) What I'm talking about.... Periodically, there are discussions about changing the namespace for nomination pages, but it's usually about moving to the Wikipedia namespace. My suggestion is that the new namespace be one in which IPs can create nominations. This would empower IPs, with zero extra work. These discussions have always fizzled out before, but the namespace-moving effort is likely to come up again soon because of the new Mediawiki reply mechanism which doesn't work in Template space. We'll see.  MANdARAXXAЯAbИAM  20:44, 29 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, so more like an added bonus from some other planned changes; got it. 2406:3003:2077:1E60:C998:20C6:8CCF:5730 (talk) 04:57, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
However, until that happens, it wouldn't hurt to ask. SD0001, I see that you check for users without JavaScript enabled, or on the mobile site; could you also check for IPs? It would be very helpful to at least give them a notice before they start, rather than having them go through the frustration of filling out the form only to find out afterwards that it doesn't work.  MANdARAXXAЯAbИAM  08:37, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect reverts -- please explain why

[edit]

Hi 2406:3003:2077:1E60:C998:20C6:8CCF:5730. Thanks for pinging me. I checked the reverts but the user name was confusing. To avoid discrepency and controversy I had to revert. Hope this clarfies and apologies if it was mistake. Thanks. Gardenkur (talk) 14:40, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Gardenkur:
the user name was confusing
What do you mean by that? As an IP user, I have no user name. Are you suggesting that you do not give credence to contributions from IP users?
To avoid discrepency and controversy I had to revert.
I have already explained to you on your talkpage here why I made those edits. They should be uncontroversial. Did you read my explanation at all? I requested an explanation as to why you made those reverts. Why do you consider the edits to be causing "discrepancy and controversy"? As I have already told you, the article content was not even modified.
apologies if it was mistake
It was, and you should fix it.
