I understand that it is generally bad form to create a link to a blog. Is that Wikipedia policy? I had created a link to a blog in the article on Kyle XY, but it was deleted. I want to advise Wikipedia that there were in fact a lot of hits to the link--about 8 per day. So there was reader interest in the link. Can I reinstate the link?(~~~~);

Image Tagging Image:Lucia4.jpg

[edit]
Warning sign
This image may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Lucia4.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Thank you for above. I have deleted the image, as I have no copyright info from it, and note that it has already been deleted on Portuguese wikipedia, where I found it.--File Éireann 14:56, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An Esperanzial note

[edit]

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Protect of Ethiopid- thanks

[edit]

Hey Brendan, thanks for protecting that article for the moment. I actually agree with the sentiment, if not the action, of the anon who 'vandalised' it: namely, the article has been created by User:Learning1 as a vehicle to promote some misguided racial perceptions on Ethiopians. They are doing this quite clumsily tho', putting together a mish-mash of barely-relevant studies without attribution and a whole bunch of stolen pics to bolster whatever theory they have. The term 'Ethiopid' barely registers in searches; unless anything credible turns up I'd maintain the whole thing could be deleted.--cjllw | TALK 23:39, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't want to accuse you of bad faith or anything, but please review your decision to protect an article linked from the front page in a version that lacks both the image and a link to the image. Hipocrite - «Talk» 22:34, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you remove the image when protecting the page? —Ruud 22:36, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I've put the image in the body of the article as a temporary compromise until consensus emerges re position.--File Éireann 22:37, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Well it should probably go at the top, but that can be done after feeling cool down a bit. Cheers, —Ruud 22:41, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am surprised that you protected the article after the image had been removed. The clear majority at the time wanted ther pictures up. Slamdac

Block without warning

[edit]

I was just about to warn the last vandal on Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy when I discovered you had blocked him. I'm not too worried about it, but I'd like to suggest that's a little premature, without at least one hand-written warning about why it's vandalism. -- SCZenz 00:44, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not a request for deleted material!!!

Please accept my thanks for your kind advice. Your comments clarified some things for me. Incidentally I am a retired child psychiatrist. My name is Frank Rafferty, e-mail address [email protected] ( notice no y )Maybe the Irish kinship came through the article.

I have tried registering two times before, but something gets fouled up with the passwords. After your comment, I immediately tried several more times inserting my name F.Rafferty and a new password. But immediately I get an error message that WP does not have a USER named F.Rafferty. Do I need some special electronic name. I only started with WP several months ago, and it does take a while to learn format, and style. Writing is easy. I just forgot the tildes in the excitement of trying to merge after a losing battle not to.

Another Esperanzial note...

[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Ethiopid should be a redirect

[edit]

I notice that you're the one who protected Ethiopid. This page contains patently inaccurate, misleading information. The lead paragraph, which states that "Ethiopid is a racial classification usually used as part of a system also including Australoid, Mongoloid, Negroid, Caucasoid, and sometimes others such as Capoid" is false. The fact is that system of ethnic/racial classification traditionally includes Capoid -- not Ethiopid. (E.g., see Capoid. Further, under "Geographic scope," the article states that Ethiopid is a distinct "race," along with Caucasoid and Mongoloid, leaving the impression that Ethiopid is not a subgroup of Negroid, which is the term that belongs in the company of the two other terms, as "Caucasoid," "Mongoloid" and "Negroid"/"Africoid" are the three universally recognized, major "racial" groups of humankind. Since ancient times, "Ethiopian" has been synononymous with "black African." Further, the term "Ethiopid" is an exceedingly archaic one. Googling "Ethiopid" produces 6 pages; whereas, "Cushitic" produces 1300+ results.

Further, no anthropologist of the last half century would contend that "Ethiopid" is a separate racial category. The term roughly corresponds to "Cushitic." Participating editors have generally agreed that the term has little credibility/use. (See the article talk page.) I suggest the page and its inaccurate information be essentially obliterated and made a redirect to Cushitic. This page should include a simple sentence stating that the term "Ethiopid" is a somewhat archaic, equivalent term referring to Cushitic peoples. deeceevoice 09:24, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Substituting will place the code from the template on that page for good, as if you had typed it in yourself, rather than loading the template every time the page is viewed. I've been running through your contribs and substituting all the templates that need it, so don't worry about the ones you've already done. Deletion of Ed Gein (band)

[edit]

I placed the following on Questioned speedy deletions, as I assume it was speedy deleted.

Deleted as 'n n bio'; I browsed this page briefly before the deletion and they seem notable enough to me. They're on Metal Blade Records, and released a demo & 2 LPs. The three album pages should not be recreated, IMO, but the main page should.

Should I question this deletion on Deletion review instead? Alternatively, IF you agree with me, would it be possible to revert the deletion? I'm certainly not trying to step on any toes. Thanks, Colonel Tom 01:41, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you. I assumed notability from the original text. I have no inherent interest in modifying the article(s). If you still maintain that notability is not evident, I have no objection per se to it being discussed / removed. And I would freely suggest that the author of the piece was incivil and vile in their response to the initial deletion. The absence of a passionate response on your part is, in my mind, a testament to your patience and your qualities as an editor (although I can only judge from this exchange!). My thanks. Another favour - re a speedy del req unrelated to yourself

[edit]

I nominated AV Voice Changer Software for speedy delete, db-copyvio, and the creator removed the tag. I don't want to edit war; I'm not sure of protocol. I know I'm running the risk of not being WP:BOLD, but I guess I'd rather be WP:CIVIL. Can you review my speedy nom and either act on it or whack me with a wet fish for being too eager? Alternatively, can you tell me what I should do? I don't know the protocol when a tag is removed and a (quick) wikisearch didn't enlighten me. That's why I'm taking the liberty of asking you for your opinion / advice / intervention. (BTW, I previously posted similar on User_talk:Splash.) Thanks, Colonel Tom 10:30, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter #2

[edit]
The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

“Medicine” on MCOTW

[edit]

After a bit of inactivity, Medicine has been selected as the new medicine collaboration of the week. I am taking the unusual step of informing all participants, not just those who voted for it, since I feel that it is important that this highest-level topic for our collaboration be extremely well-written. In addition, it is a core topic for Wikipedia 1.0 and serves as the introduction to our other articles. Yet general articles are the ones that are most difficult for individuals to write, which is why I have invited all participants. I hope it isn't an intrusion; I don't make plan to make a habit of sending out these messages. — Knowledge Seeker 02:16, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

[edit]
The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

A short Esperanzial update

[edit]

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

So in my view I merely responded to your rudeness in kind. Or indeed if the admins would start being a little less trigger-happy and instead use a tag or something. --CygnusPius 15:39, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PGNx Media

[edit]

Hey Brendanconway,

I noticed that you were the moderator that brought PGNx Media into deletion discussion. What do you think the final outcome of it would be? Do you recommend adding anything to make sure that it can stay?

Thanks for your time. Thinkjose 23:45, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pantip.com

[edit]

Hi, could I ask you to remove the afd tag on Pantip.com? It is Thailand's largest Internet forum and the article that I'm putting together is genuine. It is not merely an advertisement, and I am in no way connected to it. Wisekwai 17:57, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I added the top ten Web sites ranking by Alexa into the article Pantip.com. I think this should solve the problem. --Manop - TH 21:11, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pope Pius XII

[edit]

Your edits look pretty solid overall and adequately referenced. However, could you keep the Holocaust section in chronological order in any further edits you want to make (I think only your first one violated this so far). Also, when you get a chance, add a full reference for The Defamation to the references section, and just use <>Author, Date, Page.<> in the text. savidan(talk) (e@) 22:54, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I had to undo your most recent changes. I've explained it all in a new section on the talk. Since you are new to the article, I will assume good faith and assume that you did not know that this information about Slovakia has been rejected over and over as not relevant to the biogrpahy of Pius, despite repeated attempts by an anon to add it without explanation. Just thought you should know that, though. savidan(talk) (e@) 20:01, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have replied. I do apologize if I gave the impression that I thought you were anything other than an outstanding contributor to Wikipedia. It's just that most people who frequent that talk page would be aware of the situation with this anon adding large swathes of off-topic information about Slovakia, and I thought you should be aware of it. savidan(talk) (e@) 20:23, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem. Thank you for understanding. I have no objection to a sentence about the Vatican response. If you have to quote, though, try to get the pithy part. savidan(talk) (e@) 20:49, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, since it looks like you have a copy of Lapide's book in front of you: one thing that you might want to look into. Some user whose name escapes me right now wanted to add something a little over a week ago about how Lapide argues that Weizsacker, who was the German-Vatican ambassador, was really a double agent who did not report Pius's protests to Hitler because he was afraid that they would lead to more violence. Something like that. If theres an index, you might look up Weizsacker. savidan(talk) (e@) 21:04, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

This user will not quit. He has vandalized my talkpage numerous times over the past three days

Before that he vandalized my talkpage[4]. Then when I reverted another user assumed he was right and reverted to JzG's version, but realized he was wrong and apologized. I was cordially and said it was alright. JzG has left numerous uncivil comments on my talkpage that can be viewed if one goes through the history of the page. He has also repeatedly been warned. I want him blocked immediately. Tchadienne 22:37, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Karofami.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Karofami.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. User:Angr 19:11, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Serious attitude problems with two editors

[edit]

There have been some serious edit warrings over at Orthomolecular medicine, Megavitamin therapy, and Pseudoscience.

Primarily two editors have been very aggressive:

This user is also involved as their sympathizer and ally:

Myself and User:Cri du canard are the ones being attacked:

You are more than welcome to examine our contributions

Here is one of my messages about the problem:

  • I have just left a warning on MichaelCPrice's talk page. He, Linas, and others are violating quite a few rules here, including conspiring against other editors, incivility, failing to assume good faith, accusing others of bad faith edits, personal attacks, etc.. Their personal edit histories are very telling. They are also coordinating their efforts to attempt to trap others in 3rr violations, and are simply taking total control over the orthomolecular medicine and megavitamin therapy articles, with MichaelCPrice apparently functioning as the ringleader of the gang. He has been warned by others. I suggest that several administrators make a serious investigation, possibly leading to long blocks. I have never seen such organized aggressiveness before here at Wikipedia. -- Fyslee 23:07, 11 August 2006 (UTC) [5][reply]

These good messages of warning from a fellow editor illustrate the problem. (The intervening belligerant responses by them say even more!):

Three Warnings to User:Linas:

Warning to User:MichaelCPrice:

Another related comment from editor Jefffire: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Jefffire&diff=prev&oldid=69208687

Now I'm making a request for investigation and help from editors and administrators because it is beyond our control. These editors are extremely aggressive. -- Fyslee 23:19, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

I would prefer to have mailed you about this, I feel all admins should have working mail links, but yours seems not to be working. I see you blocked and unblocked this user Comanche cph (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log) recently. I've given the user a 24 hour for edit warring on Scandinavia. If you could mail me with info on why you took your block back, (or answer here, or on AN/I, as you prefer) that would be swell. ++Lar: t/c 17:10, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be glad to. This user is establishing a pattern of edits which break WP:Civil & WP:3RR especially. You will see that I gave him a 48 hour block previously. On this occasion, I reflexively blocked him for returning to his old habits, but after reviewing a second time, I decided that one warning should be given. I continue to monitor his behaviour whenever I am on line--File Éireann 20:31, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

September Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.

St Bernadette & Lourdes

[edit]

I can't pin down a contemporary online source that will prove to your satisfaction that the shrine was dedicated specifically to Persephone but the following excerpt does allude to it:

A contemporary account of the apparitions at Lourdes: "BIBLE AND LOURDES ROSARY AND LOURDES" "In the niche of the Grotto where Mary will appear there was a square stone of different composition from the Grotto which apparently at one time was used for pagan sacrifices. How appropriate and meaningful for Mary to stand on that stone since she is the one who came to crush the serpent's head through her Son." http://www.ewtn.com/library/Prayer/ROSLOURD.HTM

I am sorry I cannot give online ref's to how the original niche was "altered" from how it looked when the BVM appeared but it must have been completed when Joseph Fabisch the sculptor chipped away at it in order to get the present statue of Our Lady to fit - it was twenty inches too big. (see Fr. Rene Laurentin "Bernadette Speaks" p508). Rather than chip away the roof he choose the floor of the niche, the ground on which the BVM stood.

The best scholarly source for further details would probably be Fr. Laurentins 30 volume research work on Lourdes but I have no access to it. Unless you have any compelling arguments against its inclusion I will probably revise it to say something like it was reputed to be a pagan shrine at one time with a footnote mentioning unverified claims that it was specifically Persephone until such times as I can pin it down to a contemporary resource.

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!

I have written a line or two in the aricle "[Irish Language]]" about the Irish Language Act discussed these days following the St Andrews Agreement but maybe there is more to be written in this article or in aticles specialised in North Ireland. Because I follow the news considering language policy, but I do not have the time to write something more myself about something I don't know enough, I am listing some links for the issue to be used by someone interested:

Wikimedia UK logo
Wikimedia UK logo

Date: 13:00 onwards, Sunday 10 August 2008

Venue: Penderel's Oak pub, Holborn WC1 map

More information: Wikipedia:Meetup/London 12

Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

Yours,

James F. (talk) 09:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please forgive the slightly impersonal mass-invite!

Hi Brendan, I hope you can help with the following: I found File:PICT0042.JPG, a photo you took, and I've asked for it to be renamed to File:Clew Bay.JPG. Then I found Clew Bay with Clare Island.JPG without any source/author. It was renamed from "PICT0040", seeing that file "0042" is from your hand and has the same topic, I was wondering if "Clew Bay with Clare Island" is also yours? The file is no longer available on en: wiki. And finally, for File:P1010012.JPG (on en: wiki) - can you give a description for what this is, so that it can be transfered to Commons? Thanks and kind regards, Deadstar (talk) 14:31, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help. It appeared the bust of John MacBride was already transfered to Commons (File:MacBride.jpg), I've added the original upload info and added a tag to the image here. I've also added information to Clew Bay with Clare Island to reflect it is in fact your image, with a PD-User license (same as for PICT0042). London Wikimedia Fundraiser

[edit]

Good evening! This is a friendly message from Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, inviting you to the London Wikimedia Fundraising party on 19th December 2010, in approximately one week. This party is being held at an artistic London venue with room for approximately 300 people, and is being funded by Ed Saperia, a non-Wikipedian who has a reputation for holding exclusive events all over London. This year, he wants to help Wikipedia, and is subsidising a charity event for us. We're keen to get as many Wikimedians coming as possible, and we already have approximately 200 guests, including members of the press, and some mystery guests! More details can be found at http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/London - expect an Eigenharp, a mulled wine hot tub, a free hog roast, a haybale amphitheatre and more. If you're interested in coming - and we'd love to have you - please go to the ten.wikipedia page and follow the link to the Facebook event. Signing up on Facebook will add you to the party guestlist. Entry fee is a heavily subsidised £5 and entry is restricted to over 18s. It promises to be a 10th birthday party to remember! If you have any questions, please email me at chasemewiki at gmail.com.

Hope we'll see you there, (and apologies for the talk page spam) - Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 18:07, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at [email protected] (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk)23:24, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

International emergency medicine

[edit]

Hi Brendan,

It doesn't look like you're very active these days, but a newbie student is hoping to expand International emergency medicine, and you're one of the few folks who ever did anything useful on that page. If you've got a bit of time, would you mind checking in on the page after a while? I don't know how soon he hopes to get started; he posted a note about it at WT:MED today. New medical organization

[edit]

Hi

I'm contacting you because, as a participant at Wikiproject Medicine, you may be interested in a new multinational non-profit organization we're forming at m:Wikimedia Medicine. Even if you don't want to be actively involved, any ideas you may have about our structure and aims would be very welcome on the project's talk page.

Our purpose is to help improve the range and quality of free online medical content, and we'll be working with like-minded organizations, such as the World Health Organization, professional and scholarly societies, medical schools, governments and NGOs - including Translators Without Borders.

Hope to see you there! --Anthonyhcole (talk) 21:14, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
