Your photo of the Adams' graves[edit]

Dear Daderot,

Please reverse the image in the photo of the Adams' graves. As depicted, both the writing on the stone and the U.S. flags are incorrectly aligned. Clearly, the flags draping the memorial stones should have the field of starts in the upper left left vice upper right corner.

[email protected] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.178.51.12 (talk) 15:40, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I believe that photograph is just the way I took it, and correctly represents their tombs. I agree that the flags are arranged in an unusual way, but if you look closely at the tomb engraving, you will see that "John Quincy Adams" is correctly depicted (not reversed). Best wishes, Daderot (talk) 23:34, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your photo of the Granary Burying Ground[edit]

Dear Daderot,

I'm writing for permission to use your photograph of the Granary Burying Ground in a low-budget documentary we are making. If you wouldn't mind, could you please let me know the best way to get in touch with you about this? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for asking. Please go right ahead - I hereby give you permission to use the photograph in any way that you wish, without fee, and with or without attribution (as you see fit). Cheers, Daderot (talk) 10:04, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Boltzmann photo[edit]

Dear Daderot,

This note is to let you know that I have taken the liberty of using your photo of the headstone of Boltzmann at the Vienna Zentralfriedhof on the 'About' page of the wiki SklogWiki. SklogWiki is a copyleft site. If you would like to attribute your 'real' name to the photo I would be delighted to do so (or you could do this yourself; SklogWiki is open-edit).

From Boston University: request of real name to display your photos on campus[edit]

Dear Daderot,

This note is to let you know that we have taken the liberty of using your photographs of the Boston Public garden swan boats and Faneuil Hall. We found your great photos here on Wikipedia. The photographs were enlarged to color posters of size 8' x 5' and used to decorate Boston University's Beantown Bash event this past February. Now, we here at Boston University would like to display those enlarged posters in the George Sherman Building on Boston University's main campus. We would like to attribute your 'real' name to the photo. Our contact e-mail is [email protected] or you can just post your name as a response to this comment in the Wikipedia discussion page. Thank you.

Walter Guyton Cady[edit]

Thank you for developing an important biography. The mention of experimental work preceeding the crystal control innovation struck me. As life in wet-ware grows more immersed in electronics, the need to know its footing grows, and these biographies, like G. W. Pierce, which has a link, help us sogs. The extent and detail of your first posting is notable. Rgdboer 20:46, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Accademia nazionale delle scienze requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Tommosimmo (talk) 12:20, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Robert Ball Hughes[edit]

I just found your new Wikipedia page today. I'm a great-great-great Grandson of Ball Hughes and have been working on a website http://robertballhughes.googlepages.com/ since February. Feel free to link to it. I already used your first picture of Nathaniel Bowditch but I like the new one better. Note that he was born in 1804 not 1806 as reported in most sources. I don't know how the discrepancy began. You can e-mail me at the address on my website. Hope to hear from you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by LibertyStanding (talkcontribs) 12:03, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of William Corcoran Eustis[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article William Corcoran Eustis, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

non-notable person

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Solenodon paradoxus (Harvard University).JPG[edit]

Hi. Thank you for uploading the image File:Solenodon paradoxus (Harvard University).JPG. Could you consider uploading it to Commons under a free licence? Even though you took the picture in violation of the museum's photography policy, this does not affect the image's copyright status in the slightest, as the museum cannot assert copyright on a stuffed animal (wich, by itself, is not subject to copyright). Thanks,  Sandstein  18:03, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. Although I am not a lawyer, I am fairly certain that I have *not* violated the museum's photography policy, and that its current location on the English language Wikipedia is consistent with Wikipedia policy (as I have documented in the photograph's description). Thus I am comfortable with the photograph's current status but would not be comfortable uploading it to Commons. You seem to have a better understanding of the legal aspects than I do, and of course may upload the image to Commons yourself if you think that's okay. Cheers, and a very happy new year to you! Orphaned non-free media (File:Ophiacodon (Harvard University).JPG)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Ophiacodon (Harvard University).JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:46, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Mazami briceni (Harvard University).JPG[edit]

Regarding File:Mazami briceni (Harvard University).JPG, the relevant practice (on Commons anyway) is that limitations of commercial photography are a matter of contract law between the photographer and the institution and have no relevant bearing on copyrights. You are still free to license the photo however you want. If you are unwilling, then the image will have to be deleted for being a replaceable non-free image. Regards, howcheng {chat} 19:21, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! As in a discussion above - Although I am not a lawyer, I am fairly certain that the image's current location on the English language Wikipedia is consistent with Wikipedia policy (as I have documented in the photograph's description), ie, it is available so long there is no image available with a better licensing status. I am comfortable with the photograph's current status but would not be comfortable changing its license. You seem to have a better understanding of the legal aspects than I do, and of course may delete it as a replaceable non-free image (assuming that's the case). Cheers! Daderot (talk) 23:39, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Rennsteiggarten Oberhof requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Note on your Dasyprocta photo[edit]

Daderot-- I posted the following as a discussion item on your Dasyprocta photo:

Location of pictured specimen

The specimen pictured is in Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology (see http://www.mcz.harvard.edu ), not the Peabody Museum (which is a Harvard anthropological museum next to the MCZ). The Harvard Museum of Natural History is more of a single-entrance fee convenience that links several distinct museums, and not really a museum in and of itself. Second NCAR photo?[edit]

Hello there, Daderot! I'm working to reconstruct the article about I. M. Pei, and I have of course found your photo of the National Center for Atmospheric Research most helpful. Insofar as the research discusses how the buildings fit into the natural surroundings, however, I wish we had a photo that showed the lab in a larger context. Do you live in or near Boulder? Is there any way you could take another photo that shows a more panoramic view? Something like this would be perfect. Thanks for your superb work on Wikipedia. Scartol • Tok 15:23, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Arlington NRHP pictures[edit]

I noticed you added a bunch of pictures to Arlington MA NRHP listings. I have pictures of most of the remaining ones -- I've just been lazy and slow about uploading them. If you haven't photographed them already, this might save you a trip (unless, of course, you want to do so anyway). Magic♪piano 02:43, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great! I was inspired by the ones you added - it's very fine to have an organized, complete set of entries. And yes, I will probably visit them all to take a look. All the best, and happy holidays, Daderot (talk) 11:08, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I looked through my photo list, and I don't have pictures (or good enough ones) of the following places: Russell Common, Winn Farm, Stephen Symmes, Jr. House, W.W. Kimball House. I am also uncertain as to exactly which building(s) are part of the Arlington Gaslight Company. While the building at 51 Grove St might be a part of it (which I have a photo of), it is also possible that the large building in the middle of the town yard (somewhat visible from the bike path, and probably requiring permission to access the yard) is the listed structure. It might take a phone call to the historical society to find out for sure. Magic♪piano 14:12, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! That will guide my visits. Since I'll be visiting other places as well, I'll probably take pictures as I belong to the "more the merrier" philosophy... I too was confused by the Gaslight Company; your suggestion as to the historical society is excellent. Cheers, Daderot (talk) 11:32, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Dasyprocta_prymnolopha_(Harvard_University).JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Dasyprocta_prymnolopha_(Harvard_University).JPG. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 13:58, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

User cats[edit]

As you recat in Commons, it would be good if you were to be careful to leave user cats, such as Category:NRHP site pictures by User:Jameslwoodward on the individual pictures, see, for example the history of File:First Congregational Church of Hyde Park Boston MA 03.jpg, where I have just replaced it. The problem appears to be limited to the three there.

You might find User cats a neater way to have a gallery than this which, although dead simple, takes a lot of page real estate for non-gallery stuff. Also, user cats let you have sub cats, so you can find things faster. Regards, . . . . Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 17:11, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Jim, I am terribly sorry if I have screwed up the user categories. That was not at all my intent, and I appreciate your efforts to make things right. With my apologies and best wishes, 01:03, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Not really a problem... As I said, it was only the three, and it gave me a reason to go through and check all of them. I certainly know how easy it is to screw up when you're doing a large recat. I've been paying a lot of attention to cats in Commons because its frustrating the number of times I've stumbled across a good pic that didn't have good cats -- I wonder how many others there are in the 5 million plus.... . . . . Fair use rationale for File:Capromys prehensilis (Harvard University).JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Capromys prehensilis (Harvard University).JPG. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:55, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I believe that this image does in fact include a fair use rationale on its page. I quote from the description provided on the page:
It is being uploaded to the English Wikipedia under the "Non-free fair use" clause because there appears to be no free-use photograph of this subject; the relevant Wikipedia policy is as follows: "Non-free media can only be used on Wikipedia if it is not possible to replace such copyrighted work with a free work of acceptable quality." Wikipedia:Image copyright tags, May 2007.
Thus the description includes a fair-use rationale, a trace-back to the relevant Wikipedia policy, and a date at which this policy was invoked. Is there more that needs to be added? cheers, Daderot (talk) 22:03, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 09:42, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is there more that needs to be added? cheers, Daderot (talk) 09:50, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Cambridge Antiquarian Society has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable society, fails WP:ORG

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ukexpat (talk) 17:37, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Javan Chevrotain (Harvard University).JPG. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. Interesting tidbit[edit]

Hello - I see that you created the Alfred Norton Goldsmith article. I've come across a neat little tidbit in an old Popular Science magazine and though you might find it interesting. I came across it when I was digging for additional sources for the Pirie MacDonald article. It's a fantastic resource, having the old Popular Science editions available online. Eskimo Curlew photo[edit]

Hi, I just noticed that the image of a stuffed specimen was actually taken by you, this means that you can actually upload the photo freely in full size, one can't copyright a bird specimen, only art, so you should definitely reupload the image on Commons. FunkMonk (talk) 19:40, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Harvard University has notices about how photographs can be used, which I have tried to honor in my upload. I am not an attorney, and do not understand how their wishes interact with copyright laws in the US, so I have kept various Harvard University museum images on Wikipedia as "fair use" images. Sorry that this is complicated, and even sorrier that I do not fully understand the law! with best wishes, Daderot (talk) 19:44, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Could you link those images here so I can determine if they are actually free after all? I'm an admin on Wikimedia Commons, I know US law when it comes to this, and we can also get some second opinions from other admins. A museum does not own the copyright to for example fossils and other specimens of actual animals, neither of paintings that are in the public domain due to age. I am 100% sure tht you can upload the photo and others like it under whatever license you want. We have plenty of free photos from Harvard University Museum already.[1] FunkMonk (talk) 19:52, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Very interesting! I am not sure how to find those images, but do know that I used an identical text description for all of them. Can one search for images uploaded by Daderot, containing the text "This photograph is from the Harvard Museum of Natural History / Peabody Museum." See the Eskimo Curlew photo description for the full text that I put in all such descriptions... Apologies that I don't know Wikipedia well enough to be able to do this myself! Daderot (talk) 15:27, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, you can go through your uploaded pictures here: [2] All the photos of stuffed specimens can be uploaded to Commons, as can ancient artwork, such as this[3]. FunkMonk (talk) 15:43, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Here are the images that you suggest may be acceptable for the commons:

I'm not sure if they're all still online, as various folks have tried to delete them. I would prefer not to transfer them myself, as I do not understand the applicable copyright laws. Cheers and thanks, Daderot (talk) 13:12, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nice, I din't see this until now. So all I need to know is what license you would release them under. FunkMonk (talk) 11:39, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I took the liberty to replace the fair use rationale with the template you use on your free images. FunkMonk (talk) 11:59, 9 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File copyright problem with File:Jean-Paul Gaultier - Bread exhibit, Paris, 2004..JPG[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Jean-Paul Gaultier - Bread exhibit, Paris, 2004..JPG, however, a second license is required for the artwork depicted. Zhuang Sawndip photo[edit]

Dear Daderot,

looking at the "Zhuang Sawndip" photo three questions spring to mind

 (1) Is the photo public domain ?
 (2) Is the content Zhuang Sawndip ?
 (3) If the content is Zhuang Sawndip is it representative ?

Johnkn63 (talk) 15:05, 4 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Johnkn63, Thanks for your note! Yes, the photo is public domain; I will make sure it is marked as such. I believe the contents are Zhuang Sawndip, based on the museum's caption and by comparing to other example images on Google. I do not know if the content is representative. Hello. Regarding the photo taken of "Drynaria fortune" in the article, it seems that the ferns themselves are misidentified. Those are definitely not basket ferns, they look more like the common ornamental Nephrolepis ferns. You might want to tell the botanical garden about it. Drynaria roosii is supposed to look like this, this, and this.-- Obsidin Soul 16:40, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, I'm very sorry about that. I am not a botanist myself, which is why I always try to include the identifying sign. Perhaps it is best to simply delete the image? Daderot (talk) 22:40, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Mitchell Wolfson, Jr. requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hello. I am an amateur, self-taught artist. I painted your picture of a garden at Gore Place to give to a friend who lives in Waltham. I took a photo of it for my archive, but from what I understand, permission to use the painting or photo for anything other than my own enjoyment would require permission from you. I can't imagine it going anywhere, but I do want to do the right thing. May I have permission to use my interpretation of your photo? Carl Conrads[edit]

Daderot--
You started a Commons page on the obscure sculptor Carl Conrads several years ago. At Carptrash's instigation, I thought you might like to see how it's developed: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Carl_Conrads Maybe he won't be so obscure in the future.
