Nice work on your new article. It would benefit from being added to appropriate WikiProjects, such as WikiProject Ireland.

Irish brands

[edit]

Please note that the category "Irish brands" is for the (Republic of) Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the UK so if you really want to add a brands category it needs to be "British brands" not the incorrect "Irish brands". Canterbury Tail talk 16:44, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please can you clean up your mass insertion of incorrect categories into Northern Ireland related companies. Again you've tagged masses of them into the wrong country. Canterbury Tail talk 00:41, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have tried and failed to find anywhere it is indicated that Category:Irish brands is limited to brands of the Republic of Ireland rather than brands of Ireland. There is nothing of assistance on the article page or talk page.
The Irish disambiguation page defines the term as referring to people from Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Category:Brands by country does not limit such category pages to current sovereign states (e.g. Category:Scottish brands, Category:Soviet brands).
There is logic in Category:Irish brands covering Ireland. The island of Ireland is treated as one for things like energy infrastructure and biodiversity, and many organisations pre-date the partition of Ireland and were founded in Ireland at a time when Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland did not exist, and continue to operate throughout Ireland (e.g. Bank of Ireland).
If there is a need for separate categories for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, maybe there should be three separate categories of Irish brands, Northern Irish brands and Brands of the Republic of Ireland? Gatepainter (talk) 05:40, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Irish brands is a subcategory of brands by country. Northern Ireland is in an different country to Ireland. British brands is more appropriate as that is the demonym for things from the country of the United Kingdom, which Northern Ireland is currently part of not Ireland. Canterbury Tail talk 11:48, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I had checked Category:Brands by country's article page and talk page on that point too, but could not find anything of assistance, save that it includes subcategories that do not relate to current sovereign states (e.g. Category:Scottish brands, Category:Soviet brands).
Northern Ireland is in a different sovereign state to the Republic of Ireland, but Wikipedia's description of "Country" does not limit itself to sovereign states. Many organisations organise themselves on an all-island basis (e.g. the (Church of Ireland)).
I have an open mind on this, but haven't yet seen anything compelling to indicate that Category:Irish brands does not relate to Ireland. Gatepainter (talk) 12:13, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
