Your sig

[edit]

Hi reinyday - I've been noticing your sig on WP:CFD... this is probably something you know all about but... you do know about being able to use four tildes (~~~~) to sign, don't you? Or have you done some fancy trick with your signature to stop it linking back to your user page? Grutness...wha? 10:22, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Most people don't know that you can get just the time stamp by typing five tildes (~~~~~), which is what I used to do:
-- Reinyday, ~~~~~
Now, I've edited my preferences and selected the "Raw signatures" box and changed my nickname to "-- Reinyday," so I only have to type four tildes (~~~~) to sign my unlinked name. -- Reinyday, 16:36, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
Ah. that explains it. Makes it harder to get to your user page, but cut and paste does the job anyway. Makes for an interesting looking sig, though slow-on-the-uptake people like me may still mistake you for a newbie occasionally :) Grutness...wha? 23:43, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your user page

[edit]

One observation about your user page, if you change the line

{| border="1" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0" style=" margin: 0.5em 1em 0.5em 0; background: #f9f9f9; border: 1px #aaa solid; border-collapse: collapse; font-size: 95%; width:100%"

to

{| border="1" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0" style=" clear: right; margin: 0.5em 1em 0.5em 0; background: #f9f9f9; border: 1px #aaa solid; border-collapse: collapse; font-size: 95%; width:100%"

it will keep the three boxes that float to the right from overlapping the table, regardless of how long your Currently Working On list becomes in the future. Aside from that, you have a very nice user page - clean, simple, and informative. Koweja 00:52, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work with Template:MtDNA and Template:Y-DNA

[edit]

Hey, very nice work with Template:Y-DNA. I'm the one who began the Human Y-chromosome DNA haplogroups back in January, and had really been feeling lost for a way to clearly express the tree relationship of the haplogroup branching. California Congressional Districts stubs not current

[edit]

Thanks for setting up all the articles for California Congressional Districts. The stubs, however, reflect the old 1990s boundaries and not the post-2001 districts (which granted were not seated until the 2004 elections). For example, the 40th is not in fact Inyo and San Bernardino Counties on the eastern border, but the northern swath of Orange County (most of which used to be in the 39th). I don't have the expertise or inclination to go through and fix them all, but for the time being perhaps it would be wise to add something like "as of 2000" to the others. -choster 15:40, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Country Template categories

[edit]

Hello, I want to mention that when you add a category to templates, it makes pages look bad. For instance, Template:FRA, you added a category and it made 1998_Wimbledon_Championships#Top_10_Seeds look bad. You need to add the category without space, I think, like in Template:DEU. Thanks. Yo. I'm more or less on a break from life right now, but I noticed your edit and wanted to thank you. That page is not very finished, clearly, and will take a long time to get right. • Hmm. Maybe. The problem is that due to all the incest (yay?), most of the tree isn't direct-descendant. Unless there's some classification system for Greek gods that I don't know about, I'm not sure how that would pan out. Admittedly, it would be cool to just hide and show branches of the tree... - Corbin Be excellent 15:52, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Benediktas Mikulis

[edit]

Hi, I was wondering if you could provide a little more info about the following, from the first edit of the Benediktas Mikulis that you started:

Benedictus Mikulis was featured in a Finnish documentary about Lithuanian freedom fighters. He is also featured in the game Dust to Dust by Brendan Powell Smith.

I'm looking for, at the least, the name of the film, and a reference or link for the game, but any info you have would be most helpful. It's mainly for the work I'm doing on the Forest Brothers article. Thanks! heqs 20:24, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • The game is minor, but the film was apparently a mainstream film. If I knew the name I would have put it in the article, but unfortunately I don't. Do you know when Benediktas Mikulis was born? — Reinyday, 23:36, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I'm glad that you liked my link finder tool. You didn't do anything wrong--unfortunately the results are not being updated. It's hosted by the German Wikimedia, and database replication was disabled for the English Wikipedia because it was slowing down the German database.

I understand that English updates will be re-enabled once a new disk drive is installed. I'm not sure when that will be; I'm in the US and the server is in Amsterdam, so it's outside of my control. Euclidean natural units

[edit]

I'd like to comment on your edit on Euclidean natural units with summary "I am removing the deletion template. I think my changes reflect the correct idea, and if so, this article should be renamed." Of course, you are free to remove the PROD template, but what's your reason for thinking that your changes reflect the correct idea? The guy who added the PROD tag said that the article is original research; are you disputing this? -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 04:15, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes I am disputing this; that's why I removed the tag. The claim of original research was based on searching for "Euclidean natural units" and finding no results. However, searching for Euclidean "natural units finds 11,700 results and Euclidean "natural unit finds an additional 716 results, so I think it is clear that "natural units" is a term used in Euclidean geometry, and I changed the article to reflect that belief. Since I am not familiar with this particular mathematic term, I said, "I think my changes reflect the correct idea," indicating that I might be wrong. Also, "natural unit" currently redirects to Planck units, so a disambiguation page should be created if my changes are correct. — Reinyday, 16:08, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
  • I found that there is an article on Natural units, so I fixed the redirect. — Reinyday, 16:16, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
    • The material entered is original research, thus there should be no google reference to it. It is a set of natural units but the method of derivation is different. Just as Planck units has its "named page", Euclidean Natural Units should remain a "named page". I am having difficulty with MathML thus have been unable to enter the mathematical process to illustrate how the ENU are derived. Mathematically it is simple, but trying to explain how it works without the equation sets is difficult. Currere 23:59, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't understand. I don't know what you mean by a "named page". I don't understand why you want to explain the derivation if it is original research. Please feel free to do what you think is best. As I said, I'm not familiar with this mathematic concept. — Reinyday, 07:08, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

i formally nominated the article (plus 2 related articles created by User:Currere) for deletion. at best it is WP:OR, but this stuff is likely pseudoscience. neither is appropriate for WP. r b-j 03:42, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - was just looking at Template:Runes - what's up with all the question marks? How does one fix that, do you know? --Bookgrrl 02:08, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • All the characters show up for me, so I can't tell if I've fixed the problem for you. I've added a unicode template. Does it display properly now? — Reinyday, 03:44, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
    • No, it's still all full of little linked question marks apart from the transliteration line. When I look at the code, they all look like this |[[Eihwaz|{{unicode|ᛇ}}]] -- I don't see anything there that would replace the question mark, it just looks like a literal "?". Maybe it's a setting on my computer so I can't see the code no matter whether I look at it in edit mode or view mode? --Bookgrrl 04:12, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yeah, it means that you don't have a font that will display the rune characters. You could probably find a font that would work to download. The links will still work to go to the relevant articles, and most articles have images in them. — Reinyday, 16:50, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Genealogy Software

[edit]

Should have expanded my comment a bit. what I was trying to say, that was unreferenced was the following part that says "There is currently a move to incorporate fields for the input of genealogical DNA test results, though this information can be added into the "Notes" field of almost all genealogy software." I can not find anything about this move to incorporate the DNA fields but I have worked out that it is a big money spinner for those involved in adding it their programs.(not a bad thing if you use the specialised feature) Thanks anyway Gioto

Trees/Tree (disambiguation) etc.

[edit]

Your changes to the disambiguation pages are pretty close to what various editors discussed, but decided against, earlier this summer. I see the logic, but I think your version makes it very difficult to find certain content. For example, someone searching for the Joyce Kilmer poem "Trees", would have to go through the following process:

  • Search on "Trees" > Tree article
  • Click disambiguation link > Tree (disambiguation) article
  • Scroll down one screen > Trees section
  • Click link to poem

It's likely that many users will give up along the way, assuming that there is no article on the poem.

Merging the Trees page with Tree (disambiguation) is better, IMO, but still requires a scroll-down. In any case, I think long disambiguation pages are awkward, and I don't see any practical advantages to them.

My inclination is to revert, but let me know what you think.--CJGB (Chris) 14:02, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • To find many items, the process is to locate the main article, click on the disambiguation link, and scroll down to find the correct item. I doubt users would give up from following this standard proceedure. I surveyed a number of articles pointing to "trees" and they were almost all intending the "tree" article, and not one of the alternatives. Perhaps once the links are fixed to read [[tree]]s then it can be changed back, but for now this will certainly send most people where they are going. What I'm saying is that I think more people will be following an internal link to trees than searching for the trees poem. In addition, a number of the "trees" disambiguation links were listed on the "tree" disambiguation page, and I think that redundance is confusing compared to having it all on one page. — Reinyday, 03:38, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi, you made an edit to the links style article that essentially reversed a style recommendation. I'm curious, where did the first recommendation (limit links in the introduction) come from & where was it decided to reverse it? I thought the first treatment made a lot of sense. Thanks! --Paul 00:34, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I combined two different sections into one paragraph, and then they seemed to contradict each other (one line said you will have a lot of links in the intro because you are introducing new concepts and the other said don't put a lot of links in the intro). — Reinyday, 05:44, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
  • Thank you for the rapid response. I think the change is a pretty significant style recommendation to be made while "reorganizing" an article. I will start a talk page topic with a suggestion.--Paul 14:06, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've restored the sentence in question per your comments. — Reinyday, 07:49, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Some edits on the Hyderabad (India) page

[edit]

Kindly check this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hyderabad_%28India%29&action=history. On 12th Oct at 04:43hrs, an administrator removed an external link (to some discussion forum) that he/she felt was an advertisement. However, whoever added that link (from the same IP address, 64.236.208.28, and perhaps someone related to that site) came back in a few hours and re-added that link, but this time by editing an existing link (to a local guide) that had been part of the page from earlier, and changing it to the link that was deleted by you. Can you kindly look this up? 59.93.77.205 05:43, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi. I don't think I removed any links. I just formatted them as references. — Reinyday, 05:48, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the reply. You certainly did not - I just noted that you have been active on this page as an administrator, and wondered if you could rectify that change that is against the spirit of wikipedia. I could make that change myself as a user, but I thought it would be in good spirit if an administrator did it, since the original change to remove an advertising link was made by an administrator. 59.93.77.205 06:11, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I understand the confusion. That line in the original message "and changing it to the link that was deleted by you." should read "and changing it to the link that was deleted by the administrator." Sorry for that :(. 59.93.77.205 06:17, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I guess I used the term administrator for editor. The problem is, I am associated with that site, and am not sure how much in the spirit of wikipedia it would be if I did it myself. What is the process in such a case?59.93.80.168 07:18, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar

[edit]
The Original Barnstar
Here's a barnstar for you as a small token of recognition for your cleanup efforts at Wikipedia:SU. Happy editing, Kusma (討論) 17:21, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Aw! It's so nice to be appreciated. Thank you for your kindness. — Reinyday, 23:21, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Why?

[edit]

Why did you restore a subjective definition of notability without participating in the ongoing discussion at Wikipedia talk:Notability, where I notice you haven't commented since November 10? Please talk with us about what you think the definition should be and why, please. -GTBacchus(talk) 23:14, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • First, I did post about my changes. Second, that is the definition of notability that existed at Wikipedia:Notability for two years. Third, I have been participating in the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Notability in an ongoing fashion for years. — Reinyday, 23:17, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm sorry; you edited the guideline before you posted to Talk, and I jumped before waiting a couple of minutes. The fact that the subjective definition has been there for two years might be why so many people complain that notability is subjective, which is the problem we're currently working to remedy. Please consult the ongoing discussion regarding definitions of notability. -GTBacchus(talk) 23:23, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I see that you have commented on the talk page. I apologize for jumping the gun. I'll reply there. -GTBacchus(talk) 23:15, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gottesman clean up

[edit]

Hi. I'm very new to this, so my apologies if I ask a pretty basic question.

When I look through the history of the one entry I made under the name Gottesman, where I entered Eric Gottesman as follows (with a number of links):

Eric Gottesman — U.S. artist/activist, photographer, founder of The Vision Collective for Education, Art, Literature and Culture, Ltd., active with Ethiopian and other AIDS projects[2] [3]

I'm just trying to figure out why it was deleted so I can make sure subsequent entries are good.

Thanks!

  • That entry has no related article and no way of verifying the information. Feel free to re-add once there is an article about Eric. — Reinyday, 18:16, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Doing something about the ridiculous date autoformatting/linking mess

[edit]

Dear Reinyday—you may be interested in putting your name to, or at least commenting on this new push to get the developers to create a parallel syntax that separates autoformatting and linking functions. IMV, it would go a long way towards fixing the untidy blueing of trivial chronological items, and would probably calm the nastiness between the anti- and pro-linking factions in the project. The proposal is to retain the existing function, to reduce the risk of objection from pro-linkers. Tony 00:59, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hooray! I am very much interested. Thanks for letting me know! — Reinyday, 18:17, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Go go

[edit]

Hi there, I saw you moved the page. I've seen it written variously as go go, go-go and gogo, there really isn't an official name for it as far as i know. But it's good that Go go redirects there --AW 20:30, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I was just going with what was dominantly used in the article and the majority of links to the page. — Reinyday, 20:31, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Untagged image

[edit]

An image you uploaded, Image:Bergheim (Bavaria) coat of arms.jpg, was tagged with the {{coatofarms}} copyright tag. This tag was deleted because it does not actually specify the copyright status of the image. The image may need a more accurate copyright tag, or it may need to be deleted. If the image portrays a seal or emblem, it should be tagged as {{seal}}. If you have any questions, ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- 15:54, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Neuburg_an_der_Donau_coat_of_arms.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Speaking of the Dead

[edit]

Hi, I did some work on the article, Naming and speaking of the dead in Judaism, I am still not sure if it is the best name for it. I wanted to combine all the different types, including alav hashalom (it was orignally in a shared article with the Islamic type). Is it not be better to have Zt"l within Naming and speaking of the dead in Judaism as it is one unified page for the same topic? Epson291 06:32, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think this can turn into a better article, I added it to the Jewish life template, which I see you've seen by your edits. Epson291 06:33, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi. There's no reason not to have a unifying article and then separate articles, pointed to with the "Main" template. Zt"l is within Naming and speaking of the dead in Judaism. — Reinyday, 06:48, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi, not sure I understand the link between Zeved habat and Naming and speaking of the dead in Judaism. Right now the latter article only seems to discuss honorifics. If you plan to add naming customs, perhaps a link could wait until this is added so the relationship between the two is made clearer. Best, --Shirahadasha 00:39, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gough's Cave redirect

[edit]

Hi, In Jan 06 you created a redirect for Gough's Cave to point at Cheddar Gorge and Caves, I've now done an article for Gough's Cave, so I've put the redirect up for rfd - hope that is OK.— Rod talk 13:55, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of List of diss songs

[edit]

An editor has nominated List of diss songs, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of diss songs and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it.
