US intellectual tradition in political reforms

[edit]

Hey. Thank you for your considered statements over the last couple weeks at Talk:United States Electoral College. I wanted to expand on a string of Congressional reform addressing state mal-apportionment in federal elections. I noted previously, efforts to curb state majority abuses included three Acts of Congress passing both House and Senate in an effort to shape political communities that resembled the underlying populations geographically, socially, and ideologically (the culturally-related basket of religion, ethnic practice, and politics): contiguity (1842), and compactness (1872), including equal population (1911) (but only for a few sessions at a time, and never enforced).

If we expand the observation from listing Acts of Congress to exploring who was sponsoring them, the topic takes on an interesting aspect of US political intellectual history. The 1842 legislation was sponsored by Jacksonian Democrats, the 1872 by Lincoln Republicans, and the 1911 by Republican and Democratic Progressives. Wiki-fencing on Talk pages notwithstanding, I understand the impulse to the National Popular Vote generally to be aligned with that intellectual tradition. To take another page from the same democratizing impulse, if the states abuse their Constitutional duty to elect US Senators by their legislatures for thirty consecutive years as they did in the Gilded Age, then the American people will pass a Constitutional Amendment taking the abused trust away from the bad actors subverting their democratic republic.

So it is, that if the states do not refrain from the egregious anti-democratic practice of winner-take-all selection of their presidential electors, I expect that in due time the American people will take away the state legislature role in choosing a president, in one way or another. I will regret the loss of political community that might follow uniform standards for redistricting by equal population, contiguous boundaries, compact shapes, and respecting political boundaries aligned with the state geography. But the voting people are sovereign, at the very least, even if the non-voting populations of the voters' neighbors who are immigrants, young, and transients are left out of the national equation the future.

But whenever a persistent political majority takes form of the same opinion, it must be allowed to prevail, or we lose the American experiment that the London Economist last week noted is the political reason that Americans respect themselves and why others around the globe in turn respect them. - TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 16:51, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

[edit]
Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:58, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Please do not move a page to a title that is harder to follow, or move it unilaterally against naming conventions or consensus, as you did to Mars Helicopter Ingenuity. This includes making page moves while a discussion remains underway. We have some guidelines to help with deciding what title is best for a subject. If you would like to experiment with page titles and moving, please use the test Wikipedia. Thank you. BilCat (talk) 21:45, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have begun a new move discussion to Ingenuity (helicopter) @ Requested move 20 February 2021. I apologize for making the move as there seemed to be some consensus for something of the form Ingenuity (x) where x != "rotorcraft". I hope you will join me at the discussion. @BilCat: UserTwoSix (talk) 22:13, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Under WP:QUALIFIER there do not appear to be extensive guidelines for Parenthetical disambiguation and so maybe you could explain why "Mars helicopter" is not a good disambiguator. UserTwoSix (talk) 22:52, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's actually in the first paragraph of the section you linked to, particularly the second sentence. BilCat (talk) 23:05, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you are saying w.r.t. "when a more detailed title is necessary to distinguish an article topic from another, use only as much additional detail as necessary" however Ingenuity does not look like a "helicopter" to me, but I can see it classifies as one. I can see it as a UAV, a rotorcraft, or a "Mars helicopter" (however there aren't many of those are there?). UserTwoSix (talk) 23:10, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The lack of a single appropriate disambiguator is part of the reason we went with the current title as a natural disambiguator. BilCat (talk) 23:25, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
But it is not the correct title anymore. It was called the "Mars helicopter" and then "Ingenuity", and someone moved the page to "mars helicopter ingenuity" when it should be "Ingenuity (disambiguator)". UserTwoSix (talk) 23:29, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Nigger of the "Narcissus"

[edit]

I realise you're trying to be helpful, but the 'forecastle' is the very front of a ship, under the foredeck; it's not the upper deck. By tradition, it's where the ordinary sailors (of merchant ships) sleep. (Naval ships had much larger crews, who needed more space.) Please read WP:COMPETENCE. Philip Trueman (talk) 18:13, 9 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't know what it meant and I assumed others might not too. I just took the definition from the first sentence of the forecastle article: the forecastle "is the upper deck of a sailing ship forward of the foremast". UserTwoSix (talk) 18:20, 9 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I put the full definition in. UserTwoSix (talk) 18:22, 9 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Philip Trueman: Since you seem sure that the latter definition is more suitable, I have put it first in The Nigger of the "Narcissus". Is this definition better? UserTwoSix (talk) 18:30, 9 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As you've done it as a footnote, not inline, I think it's fine. Perhaps not everyone will agree, but I'm OK with it. Be aware that there are special considerations when it comes to what goes at the very start of an article - see WP:LEDE.

Information icon Hi UserTwoSix! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor at Cannabidiol that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia – it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. - Sumanuil (talk) 00:33, 14 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sumanuil:, Sorry I get a little sloppy when I make a bunch of edits and I try to mark them appropriately. I looked at the edits and I see formatting ones, a grammatical correction, adding a wikilink, and changing the heading. So I guess you mean changing the heading. I thought I wasn't changing the meaning and it was a better heading. But I appreciate the link to what a Minor Edit is because I really should read the page through. Information icon Thank you for your edit to the disambiguation page TMI. However, please note that disambiguation pages are not articles; rather, they are meant to help readers find a specific article quickly and easily. From the disambiguation dos and don'ts, you should:

  • Only list articles that readers might reasonably be looking for
  • Use short sentence fragment descriptions, with no punctuation at the end
  • Use exactly one navigable link ("blue link") in each entry
    • Only add a "red link" if used in existing articles, and include a "blue link" to an appropriate article
  • Do not pipe links (unless style requires it) – keep the full title of the article visible
  • Do not insert external links or references

Please review Original research for what we can and cannot say (or synthesize) without a reliable source for the content. General Ization Talk 22:31, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Also, what is "286"? The number of residents of the portion that collapsed? Of the entire building? The number of residents plus staff and guests of residents that might have been on the site at 0124 on 7/24? Too vague to be useful. General Ization Talk 22:35, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please explain where the elements of {{sum|127|14}} come from. I'm not understanding that, and why it is not also synthesis. Even if we agree it should stay, it needs a hidden comment to explain this so others can maintain it. General Ization Talk 22:48, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The latest figure was June 26, 127 accounted for, 159 missing. June 30, 145 missing. So 14 more accounted for. UserTwoSix (talk) 22:54, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted the statement. As I have been trying to explain, that is a classic case of synthesis, and is based on what is now outdated information. We do not know who is or how many are accounted for that have not yet been reported. In addition, the two refs you cited will not change, but the number of people "accounted for" certainly will, and we should not need to have to try to re-source that specific statement every time new data on missing and dead is released. All that does is increase the probability of our relating misinformation. General Ization Talk 22:58, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Term with Dutch indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! A tag has been placed on Humanus requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a recently created redirect from an implausible typo or misnomer, or other unlikely search term.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. signed, Rosguill talk 16:57, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Carbonara

[edit]

Thanks for your edits to carbonara. It really isn't necessary to say ground pepper or grated cheese or cut-up pancetta -- we presume that our readers aren't idiots, and anyway, this is just the ingredients list. As for charcoal burner, it's enough to click on that link if you don't know what a charcoal burner is. Finally, our standards for categories say that we don't include redundant categories. Since the category Category:Spaghetti dishes is itself categorized as Category:Pasta dishes, we don't need to add it to the article. See WP:Categorization. --Macrakis (talk) 21:58, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Macrakis: When I had carbonara, I thought it had something to do with coal miners. I saw that it was actually named for "charcoal burners" which to me sounds like charcoal chimney so I thought maybe someone else would be confused and it would help to say it is a person. I know about the supercategories, like Category:Pasta dishes, but since it isn't always made with spaghetti, what do we do then? I thought maybe it could be both a "pasta" dish and a "spaghetti" dish. UserTwoSix (talk) 22:28, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Formal request regarding redirects

[edit]

Both I and User:EnPassant have spoken to you about your redirect creations, but you've continued to create questionable redirects. There are 35 RfD notifications on this page. Of those 35, I count 25 deleted, 5 retargeted or disambiguated, 1 no consensus, 1 keep, 3 ongoing. You have also had several redirects speedily deleted. To be clear, these aren't normal numbers. If I had to guess I'd say that most editors have less than 1% of their redirects taken to RfD; and the rate of keep outcomes is defintely more than 135.

I don't want to make you feel bad. You create a lot of good redirects, don't get me wrong. But you're still making a lot that have issues. Of your 50 most recent, I spot at least 5 that I'll need to take to RfD, including Bloody vagina and Cat-sized. And since this has persisted after my and EnPassant's requests (although I do think EnPassant was a bit too curt), I'd like to formally request that, in the future, you only create redirects using WP:AFC/Redirects, at least for a little while till you get a better sense of what makes a good redirect.

I'm not an admin, so I can't force you to do this, but I hope you'll seriously consider it. Rosguill is one of our best redirect admins, and since they've RfD'd a number of your redirects I'm pinging them to see if they have any thoughts regarding this request. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 22:53, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

To avoid spamming you with pings, I disabled individual notifications, but please see Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2021 August 24 for RfDs of AR^, Cat-sized, Afghan withdrawal, Climate accords, Osborne's band, Zappa's band, and Bloody vagina. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 23:21, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Tamzin, I agree with your concerns and your framing. UserTwoSix, while you've contributed several good redirects (and many more that I'm indifferent to but that aren't bad in the way that necessitates intervention), your signal to noise ratio leaves something to be desired. Unlike past editors that have ended up banned from creating redirects, you have created some helpful redirects, so I think that Tamzin's suggestion to use AFC/R is reasonable. The one last thing I'll note for transparency's sake is that even as an admin, I do not have the authority to unilaterally ban anyone from creating redirects. If this situation isn't resolved, however, I or another editor will bring this issue to WP:ANI where it would be subject to discussion, with a redirect ban on the table as a possible outcome. signed, Rosguill talk 00:33, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for listening to what we had to say, UserTwoSix. See you at AFC/R. :) -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 02:14, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, UserTwoSix. I think there may have been a misunderstanding here. I had taken your above comment to mean that you were going to stop creating redirects except through WP:AFC/R. But I see that since your last comment here you've made a number of redirects, including one that I've RfD'd (although in fairness I don't think it was a particularly bad choice of target). Do you or do you not intend to restrict your creations to AFC/R? If not, I'm afraid that, if I see you create a problematic redirect again, I'll have to go to WP:ANI to request that the community formally restrict you to creating redirects through AFC/R. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 20:28, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
