Discussion regarding article on Scottish Museums with a Recognised Collection

[edit]

Hi John.

Lirazelf mentioned to me that you had both discussed the potential need for an article on Scottish museums who have achieved Recognised Collection status. I have been working on creating this page using information from the Museums Galleries Scotland website and Scottish Government archives and you can see the work in progress in my sandbox. Trying to get the information in a workable format is proving time consuming at the moment.

If it's still an area of interest to you I'd love to collaborate and get this article published.

Macfack (talk) 10:40, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo both! Would love to see this article happen. Keep me in the loop, if there's anything I can do to help. Lirazelf (talk) 09:43, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I think it would be great to publish an article about your work once the page is completed and live so we can promote it. If I remember correctly what I discussed with Lirazelf was a short summary of her residency now that it has come to an end. --Jwslubbock (talk) 14:29, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Not quite come to an end... end of this month now that we've secured the Western Isles project :) Lirazelf (talk) 09:44, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oh right, sorry. Well I was aiming to have a newsletter out on the 30th, but if you'd like to write the summary after that it can go in the next newsletter. --Jwslubbock (talk) 12:51, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Esra Mungan requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. December 2016

[edit]

Information icon Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. You appear to be repeatedly reverting or undoing other editors' contributions at Water fasting. Although this may seem necessary to protect your preferred version of a page, on Wikipedia this is known as "edit warring" and is usually seen as obstructing the normal editing process, as it often creates animosity between editors. Instead of reverting, please discuss the situation with the editor(s) involved and try to reach a consensus on the talk page.

If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to lose editing privileges. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Edit warring on Wikipedia is not acceptable in any amount, and violating the three-revert rule is very likely to lead to a loss of editing privileges. Thank you. Alexbrn (talk) 14:12, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

== Hi Alex, you appear to be repeatedly deleting my edits on this page without explaining why. I am not edit warring, I am simply trying to improve this article, and it's very offputting to have people simply delete entire paragraphs without explanation. I have twice now improved the referencing and added more information, and you simply deleted the entire paragraph without saying why. If you could please engage with me on this page to improve it, rather than deleting all of my hard work, that would be much appreciated. --Jwslubbock (talk) 15:06, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You are edit warring poorly-sourced material into the encyclopedia; if you followed the link in my ES you'd see why. If you continue edit warring you are likely to get blocked. Alexbrn (talk) 15:15, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
What's poorly sourced? I am trying to improve the sourcing, and have done so. If you disagree with a reference, take it out or explain why it is not a good reference. I've referenced university sites, articles by doctors, etc. So instead of deleting everything and accusing me of bad faith, which is against Wikipedia rules, why not help me to improve the article? This is a collaborative project, and we should be working together, don't you think? --Jwslubbock (talk) 15:18, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Did you read WP:MEDRS? Primary research sources and GQ magazine (e.g.) are not reliable sources for biomedical content. Nobody has mentioned "bad faith" except you. If you want to get material into Wikipedia the onus is on you to make it good enough to stick: maybe try WP:BRD in future rather than edit-warring? Alexbrn (talk) 15:20, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Then why did you delete all the secondary sources like the HuffPo article by the doctor? Why don't you delete the stuff that doesn't meet referencing standards, rather than deleting the whole thing? This stuff could be improved, but now I don't see the point trying if you're just going to delete everything again.--Jwslubbock (talk) 15:24, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
So you didn't read MEDRS. If you had you'd know HuffPo isn't suitable. In fact, it isn't suitable for anything much since it's a junk source. Alexbrn (talk) 15:26, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Why don't you just delete the entire article then, rather than trying to make it better as I am? I will add in some different sources, but I imagine you'll delete everything else I write too. I don't see why you can't work with me to improve the article, rather than just deleting other people's hard work. I wonder what sources you will accept as valid? There's an MSNBC source on that page which you've not deleted, so I have no idea what your issue is with HuffPo. What about this source?--Jwslubbock (talk) 18:08, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That healthscience.org source is beyond terrible (see WP:Lunatic charlatans). It does not improve the article to add junk to it. If there are WP:MEDRS sources on the health effects of water fasting, it would be great to find them and use them. I'd happily work with you doing this. Alexbrn (talk) 19:06, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that would be good. The reason I started editing was because I was on Twitter and came across some quack self-help guru saying Wikipedia was biased because this article wasn't very good. Here's the link. It does seem that there are a lot of non-serious health websites talking about this treatment, and a dearth of journal sources about it. I would like to understand better what medical sources are accepted, and have found a few I think are a bit better. I'll post the start of a reworked section on health benefits on the article now and you can tell me if you think these sources are better. What I'd like is to make that self-help guru's blog about how biased Wikipedia is obsolete within a few days of him writing it so we can show him how good Wikipedia can be at improving medical information quickly. One of the main researchers seems to be a Dr Alan Goldhamer, who in this interview notes that he has published studies in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics and Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine on water fasting. I'm not sure how we could use these sources though as I doubt they're open.--Jwslubbock (talk) 19:15, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Alex, it looks like you've deleted all my work again. This is very frustrating. I keep asking you to work with me and help me understand how to make something you're not just going to delete, but all you've done is to delete my stuff, rather than help me make it better. I put in serious medical journals, but you're just deleting it all. What's wrong with what I put? Please explain, don't just delete. It's my job to try to attract more editors to Wikipedia, but this is the kind of behaviour which loses us editors. Please can you engage with me? For example, what if there simply are no sources available in any of the journals specified in WP:MEDRS? I cited journals which you've now deleted - what was wrong with them? If there are no journals we can cite, do we just leave the article with no information in it? There seems to be a lot of faddy dieting stuff around this subject. Wikipedia is the best available version of the info on something. Surely if no journals are available from the specified list, you should use another journal even if it's not specified there. --Jwslubbock (talk) 14:30, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't me. Please discuss article content on the article's Talk page. If there are no WP:MEDRS sources for a health topic, it likely not a topic we can write about encyclopedically. Alexbrn (talk) 14:57, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

cYes, it was you. I've just reverted your last deletion, because I don't believe you are looking at the references or the substance of what I wrote. I used medical journal articles and you simply deleted it. Why are you doing this? Please help improve the article, rather than deleting all of my work. You are not being constructive at all. The sources I used were from the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the American Association for the Advancement of Science's publication 'Science', and the US National Library of Medicine's Integrative Medicine journal. Can you please explain what is wrong with these sources? How can you say these are not reliable? --Jwslubbock (talk) 15:19, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You're wrong, it wasn't me. And your sources are not good. Continue edit-warring and you're on your way to a block. As I say, discuss content on the article Talk page. I'll not reply here further. Alexbrn (talk) 15:44, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't wrong, but thanks for the threats.--Jwslubbock (talk) 15:47, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You were wrong, here is the diff. Please also note the edit summary. Roxy the dog. bark 19:46, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Beryl Rawson

[edit]

On 6 February 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Beryl Rawson, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in the late 1970s Beryl Rawson used computers to analyse the family life of Roman slaves? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Beryl Rawson. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Beryl Rawson), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

— Maile (talk) 12:07, 6 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much! --Jwslubbock (talk) 08:02, 8 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I nominated several of those classicists for DYK and they are coming through now. See DYK talk for some stats. Beryl Rawson got thousands of readers yesterday and Amy Richlin did even better. These numbers are not as huge as the Queen, say, but they are lot more than the articles can expect usually. You can show the effect visually and so you may be interested in using some of this for social media coverage. Myself, I sometimes tweet to interested parties when their articles are on the main page and it usually goes down well. We can perhaps talk about this on Sunday -- will you be at the meetup? Andrew D. (talk) 08:35, 8 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Argh, I'm on holiday at the moment and am coming back on Sunday. I really want to go as I've not been to a meetup for a couple of months, but I'm not sure I'll be back in time. Would you be free during the week to talk about it? You're welcome to come to the office, as I'd really like to get more input from the community and learn from them about this kind of thing. --Jwslubbock (talk) 10:07, 8 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The meetup usually lasts until about 7 pm so that might still work but otherwise I can arrange to come to Development House sometime. That is an ethical property and, as it happens, I'm planning a talk to the Ethical Society at Conway Hall in April. The working title for the talk is "The Ethical Encyclopedia" so it would be good to gather some relevant material for that too. Andrew D. (talk) 10:45, 8 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That would be good Andrew. Please let me know when would be good for you. Do you have my work email? --Jwslubbock (talk) 12:25, 8 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure. I'll use the email link here to send you my contact details. Andrew D. (talk) 14:24, 8 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You can see it's from the same dinner I went to with Barbaros where I also took the photo that appears in this article I wrote about him. Jwslubbock (talk) 11:49, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I assume GF

[edit]

I assume GF, not bad faith but if you keep adding fringe theories, I 'll simply revert you and ask for an admin intervention. Catharsis of Mind (talk) 14:34, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have seen no discussion of Izady being unreliable. He's a well known source who is included on many pages on Kurdish history, so it's rather your subjective opinion about whether his extensive writing on Kurdish history constitutes a fringe theory. I have noticed that many of the accounts deleting efforts to improve that page don't have user talk pages or are anonymous IP addresses, so I would encourage you to fill yours out so that other users can understand where you are coming from. We can all ask for admin interventions, and threatening people is not a good way to develop a positive interaction with other users, so please take a look at the way you interact as it will probably improve your experience on the Wikimedia projects. --Jwslubbock (talk) 15:33, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I am not threatening you, I am just reminding you the policies such as Wikipedia:fringe theories. You cannot accuse others as being "subjective" just because they warned you. It's an ad hominem and personal attack. Maybe you should assume good faith before reminding it others. By the way, I am here since 2014 and has a "talk page". Doug Weller and HistoryofIran have also talk pages. Catharsis of Mind (talk) 15:44, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Are you actually suggesting that the idea that the Kurds may bear some genetic/cultural relation to the occupants of the Kurdistan region before 0 AD is a fringe theory? I'm happy to go through my entire library of books on Kurds and Kurdish history to find numerous examples of this idea. I just wonder how many examples of this in the literature I will have to find before the squatters on that page decide it's not a fringe theory anymore. I wonder why you've been editing since 2014 and have not bothered to fill out your user page. As I suggested, it would help others to understand who you are and what your interests are, so I would advise you to put something there about yourself. Again, I'm not accusing you of being subjective for threatening to call admins on me, I'm saying your belief that a common theory in the literature on Kurdish history is a fringe theory is subjective. Seeya. --Jwslubbock (talk) 16:11, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It is not my suggestion, stop personalizing the topic. Putting forward that Kurds are descendants of ancient Neolithic peoples of Fertile Crescent is not a common theory, but a FRINGE and UNDUE theory, as admin and other users said many times. The common theory is that Kurds are a semi-nomadic North Western Iranic peoples. And, your edits will be reversed if they violate WP:FRINGE, WP:UNDUE, WP:RS again. Catharsis of Mind (talk) 16:26, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me if I don't feel the need to take the word of anonymous Wikipedia accounts who provide no references for their subjective ideas about what are common theories on this subject. Bye bye! Jwslubbock (talk) 16:40, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have to expose my "hobbies", "areas of interests" and so forth on my user page! Stop repeating it again and again, it is out off the topic and harrassing. If you think that your sources are very reliable and the view relating Kurds to anciet Neolithic peoples is mainstream, then go and open a thread about them on Wikipedia:Reliable sources noticeboard, then we will see what the consensus is. Even admins say that they are unreliable and removed them from the pages. Catharsis of Mind (talk) 16:50, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You've come to my talk page to inflict your subjective ideas on me, anonymous person, so I really think that it's you who should stop spamming my page and harassing me, or we might have to get those admins involved, eh? As I said, I will go back to the literature and see what the consensus there is, and then it can be tested on the page itself, but you are really wasting your time getting angry at me, and I advise you to leave it there before this escalates. OK? Thanks. Jwslubbock (talk) 16:56, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you think that it is my and other users' "subjective ideas", I suggest you to go and ask it on WP:RSN, but you reject it. Thus, stop accusing others as being "subjective" and spamming talk pages of the articles. Again, if the same problem occurs again, I'll report you. Bye!Catharsis of Mind (talk) 17:06, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Seriously, go away and stop harassing me on my talk page or I will report you. Your behaviour is falling far below acceptable standards. Jwslubbock (talk) 17:09, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Jorja Smith

[edit]

The article Jorja Smith has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Notability not established. With no major news coverage outside of his hometown. His entire discography consists of a guest spot for one song (interlude does not count, as the two songs combine into one larger one) on someone else's album, which was not even a single.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Priss Fotheringham requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://londonist.com/london/history/the-second-best-whore-in-the-city. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues here.
  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. CAPTAIN RAJU(T) 19:31, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
CAPTAIN RAJU I find this to be a particularly unhelpful message for the following reasons: a) welcome to Wikipedia notices on accounts that have been here for over 5 years are patronising, b) Your assertion that there was copyrighted material on the page I made for Priss Fotheringham is quite extraordinary. If you are going to make these unhelpful accusations, at least can you tell me what information on the page you considered to be copyrighted. There was no media there. Please can you explain this to me properly? Jwslubbock (talk) 14:22, 17 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

[edit]

Hello, Jwslubbock. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for recognising the Dataism article. I was surprised nobody had created it before. I wonder what kind of media might be appropriate to illustrate it with. If I see Harari speaking anywhere I'm going to be, I might try to get a photo of him, or even ask him to say something on video about Dataism. • Thank you Jwslubbock. Yes, I was equally surprised nobody had created a Dataism article! Good luck, Harari should be promoting his upcoming book in August, perhaps he will discuss it then. I will keep a look out for other authors who are discussing Dataism. -- Cerulean Air (talk)

Notice

The article MENA WHRD Coalition has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No independent reliable sources seem to discuss this organisation indepth, all we have are self-published sources and reprints of their statements and press releases. No better sources for "MENA WHRD Coalition" or "Regional Coalition of Women Human Rights Defenders" could be found. Fails WP:N.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Copyvios

[edit]

Yesterday, I deleted Polly Harrar as a copyright violation from here.

Your text: "has personally supported over 500 clients dealing with issues such as forced marriage, homelessness, asylum and immigration issues, honour based abuse (HBA), prejudice due to sexual orientation, domestic violence, FGM, mental health, substance misuse and other issues."

Source: "has personally supported over 500 clients on issues ranging from forced marriage, homelessness, asylum & immigration matters, honour based abuse (HBA), persecution due to sexual orientation, domestic violence, child protection, repatriation, FGM, mental health, substance misuse and cultural conflict"

Your text: "is a member of the Forced Marriage Unit Partnership Board, Panel Member for the Children’s Commissioner’s Inquiry looking into child sexual abuse within the familial environment and lead partner of the national Our Girl campaign funded by Comic Relief"

Source: "is a member of the Forced Marriage Unit Partnership Board, Panel Member for the Children’s Commissioner’s Inquiry looking into child sexual abuse within the familial environment and lead partner of the national Our Girl campaign funded by Comic Relief"

Your text: "In 2013, Harrar was highly commended at the Asian Women of Achievement Awards for her social and humanitarian work and named in the Independent on Sunday’s 100 Happy List."

Source: "In 2013 Polly was highly commended at the Asian Women of Achievement Awards for her social and humanitarian work, and named in the Independent on Sunday’s 100 Happy List."

And so on.

I now notice that this isn't the first time you have done this (and that concerns have been raised on this talk page by others in the past). An article like Huseyin Çelebî takes parts of its text straight from (not really very neutral) sources like this one:

Your text: " a pioneer of the Kurdistan Students’ Union (YXK) in Europe." "After being released in 1990, Huseyin Celebi joined the ranks of the Kurdistan Freedom Movement in the summer of 1991, and was killed in 1992."

Source: "a pioneer of the Kurdistan Students’ Union (YXK) in Europe," "After being released in 1990, Huseyin Celebi joined the ranks of the Kurdistan Freedom Movement in the summer of 1991, and was martyred in 1992."

The article also contains factual errors, like "The 2017 Huseyin Çelebî Literature and Poetry Festival in London [...] was the first time the festival was held outside of Turkey.". I doubt it was ever held in Turkey, and e.g. the 2016 edition was held in Germany (Kassel). And the article is completely sourced to sources directly related to the subject, not to independent sources.

Alida Jantina Pott is a translation of the Dutch Wikipedia article. This should be mentioned (in the edit summary and at the talk page) when you do this, otherwise this is also a copyright violation. Similarly, Bahire Bediş Morova Aydilek is a translation from the French Wikipedia article: you correctly acknowledged this on the talk page, but should have stated this in the edit summary as well.

Gil Hayward also had problems with copyvio / close paraphrasing, but has been solved by others.

Please go through your older articles and correct problems of copyvio and attribution. More importantly, please make sure that in the future you don't continue inserting copyright violations or close paraphrases into Wikipedia. Fram (talk) 08:54, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, this is an incredibly bad faith thing to do. This article was part of Wikimedia UK's project with Amnesty International to create more biographies on women human rights defenders. This page could have been improved. I am honestly shocked by this deletionist behaviour. You are making our work harder, and making more work for us to improve the encyclopaedia. Fram Jwslubbock (talk) 11:34, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You don't improve the encyclopedia by adding copyvios, and you are the one creating extra work for others by the cleanup of your articles that needs to be done to get rid of these violations (see e.g. the Gil Hayward article I linked to above). That the article was not created by some clueless newbie but as part of a Glam / chapter effort makes it even worse, and to use the reason this article was created as an excuse for why it apparently shouldn't have been deleted is low. Next time you want to improve the encyclopedia, don't add further copyright violations. The alternative is that you simply get blocked. Fram (talk) 11:37, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Why not ask me to improve it and change the text more? When we do events we create a lot of articles, with the intention that they can be improved later. So I didn't change some text enough for you. Ok. Why not contact me and work with me rather than hounding my edits and simply deleting stuff? Aren't we in the same community here? Why don't you work with us rather than deleting our hard work? This is the kind of behaviour which makes our community a toxic place to be in. Jwslubbock (talk) 11:50, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Creating copyvio's is not "hard work", it is lazy work. And it isn't the first time you did this either. Next time you plan an event, create less articles but better ones, or create them in draft space (not that copyvio's are allowed there, but it is slightly less problematic if you create them there and then clean them). Copyvioin the mainspace is not something that "can be improved later", it is a red flag, something which shouldn't be in the article ever. I note that your nex attempt at writing an article for Harrar still has things like "a leading expert on forced marriages and honour based abuse" where the source[1] has the identical "a leading expert on forced marriages and honour based abuse". Fram (talk) 12:14, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I changed one word and removed another from that sentence, so I hope it's ok now. I appreciate the opportunity to improve the Polly Harrar article, rather than having it deleted again. I hope that if you ever have concerns about articles I've written, you will ask me to improve them as they've been created in good faith. Wikipedia is a work in progress, and while I try not to cut corners, I'm happy to admit I don't get things right all the time. I hope you appreciate that we are trying to do good work to improve the encyclopaedia, and that this work should be encouraged. All the best to you, Fram. Jwslubbock (talk) 12:37, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good work should be encouraged, but copyvio really is non negotiable, and if you continue to add copyvios to articles, you will get blocked, no matter how many good things you do otherwise. In the future, just don't "copy and then change some words", but read the text and summarize or rewrite it then in your own words, from scratch. Fram (talk) 12:48, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I look forward to your encouragement of all my good work in future then. :) Jwslubbock (talk) 13:55, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:16, 14 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jwslubbock. Please don't modify closed AfD's as you did at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/MENA WHRD Coalition. I honestly don't have the emotional labour capacity to fight deletionists when they delete pages on women and underrepresented subjects. It will have no effect to go and complain on that person's talk page.Jwslubbock (talk) 12:27, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The science publishing landscape

In an ideal world ... no, bear with your editor for just a minute ... there would be a format for scientific publishing online that was as much a standard as SI units are for the content. Likewise cataloguing publications would not be onerous, because part of the process would be to generate uniform metadata. Without claiming it could be the mythical free lunch, it might be reasonably be argued that sandwiches can be packaged much alike and have barcodes, whatever the fillings.

The best on offer, to stretch the metaphor, is the meal kit option, in the form of XML. Where scientific papers are delivered as XML downloads, you get all the ingredients ready to cook. But have to prepare the actual meal of slow food yourself. See Scholarly HTML for a recent pass at heading off XML with HTML, in other words in the native language of the Web.

The argument from real life is a traditional mixture of frictional forces, vested interests, and the classic irony of the principle of unripe time. On the other hand, discoverability actually diminishes with the prolific progress of science publishing. No, it really doesn't scale. Wikimedia as movement can do something in such cases. We know from open access, we grok the Web, we have our own horse in the HTML race, we have Wikidata and WikiJournal, and we have the chops to act.

Wikidata imaged

Around 2.7 million Wikidata items have an illustrative image. These files, you might say, are Wikimedia's stock images, and if the number is large, it is still only 5% or so of items that have one. All such images are taken from Wikimedia Commons, which has 50 million media files. One key issue is how to expand the stock.

Indeed, there is a tool. WD-FIST exploits the fact that each Wikipedia is differently illustrated, mostly with images from Commons but also with fair use images. An item that has sitelinks but no illustrative image can be tested to see if the linked wikis have a suitable one. This works well for a volunteer who wants to add images at a reasonable scale, and a small amount of SPARQL knowledge goes a long way in producing checklists.

Gran Teatro, Cáceres, Spain, at night

It should be noted, though, that there are currently 53 Wikidata properties that link to Commons, of which P18 for the basic image is just one. WD-FIST prompts the user to add signatures, plaques, pictures of graves and so on. There are a couple of hundred monograms, mostly of historical figures, and this query allows you to view all of them. commons:Category:Monograms and its subcategories provide rich scope for adding more.

And so it is generally. The list of properties linking to Commons does contain a few that concern video and audio files, and rather more for maps. But it contains gems such as P3451 for "nighttime view". Over 1000 of those on Wikidata, but as for so much else, there could be yet more.

Go on. Today is Wikidata's birthday. An illustrative image is always an acceptable gift, so why not add one? You can follow these easy steps: (i) log in at https://tools.wmflabs.org/widar/, (ii) paste the Petscan ID 6263583 into https://tools.wmflabs.org/fist/wdfist/ and click run, and (iii) just add cake.

See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. [edit]

On 24 November 2018, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article Raed Fares (activist), which you updated. I have added some advice here about donating images, that may be useful in stock letters. Seems an interesting guy. --ClemRutter (talk) 14:45, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCite issue

GLAM ♥ data — what is a gallery, library, archive or museum without a catalogue? It follows that Wikidata must love librarians. Bibliography supports students and researchers in any topic, but open and machine-readable bibliographic data even more so, outside the silo. Cue the WikiCite initiative, which was meeting in conference this week, in the Bay Area of California.

Wikidata training for librarians at WikiCite 2018

In fact there is a broad scope: "Open Knowledge Maps via SPARQL" and the "Sum of All Welsh Literature", identification of research outputs, Library.Link Network and Bibframe 2.0, OSCAR and LUCINDA (who they?), OCLC and Scholia, all these co-exist on the agenda. Certainly more library science is coming Wikidata's way. That poses the question about the other direction: is more Wikimedia technology advancing on libraries? Good point.

Wikimedians generally are not aware of the tech background that can be assumed, unless they are close to current training for librarians. A baseline definition is useful here: "bash, git and OpenRefine". Compare and contrast with pywikibot, GitHub and mix'n'match. Translation: scripting for automation, version control, data set matching and wrangling in the large, are on the agenda also for contemporary library work. Certainly there is some possible common ground here. Time to understand rather more about the motivations that operate in the library sector.
