フォルカー・シュレンドルフ監督による『ブリキの太鼓』（1979年）はドイツ初のアカデミー国際長編映画賞（外国語映画賞）受賞作となった。 ドイツは1956年に初めてアカデミー国際長編映画賞[nb 1]に映画を出品した。アカデミー国際長編映画賞はアメリカ合衆国の映画芸術科学アカデミー（AMPAS）が主催し、アメリカ合衆国以外の国で製作され、主要な会話が英語以外で占められた長編映画を対象としている[3]。
アカデミーは毎年各国からその年で最高とされる作品を招待し、規則に従って競わせる[3]。しかしながら20世紀後半のほとんどの間分断されていたドイツは西ドイツと東ドイツがそれぞれ出品していた。8作品がノミネートされ、そのうち1作品が受賞を果たした西ドイツ[4]は、モスクワ国際映画祭での上映が拒否された『嘘つきヤコブ（英語版）』がノミネートされるだけに留まった東ドイツを大きく引き離した[5]。西ドイツは初の出品となった1956年から4年連続でノミネートを果たしたが、1960年代のあいだは全て落選となった。その後ニュー・ジャーマン・シネマが盛んになると海外でのドイツ映画の評価の向上に繋がり、1970年代に再びノミネートを果たす作品が現れ、1979年の『ブリキの太鼓』では初の受賞にも至った[6]。
1990年10月に西ドイツと東ドイツが再統一されると、翌1991年3月25日開催の第63回アカデミー賞[7]でドイツは初めて統一国としてアカデミー国際長編映画賞に参加した。統一ドイツ代表作は2022年度までに12本がノミネートを果たし、カロリーヌ・リンクの『名もなきアフリカの地で』（2001年）、フロリアン・ヘンケル・フォン・ドナースマルクの『善き人のためのソナタ』（2006年）、エドワード・ベルガーの『西部戦線異状なし』（2022年）の3本が受賞している。
